Chain Of Lakes
The chain is made up of four all-sports, completely private lakes linked together via natural channels. The property is conveniently situated on a no-wake zone on the northwestern corner of Crooked Lake. This protects your boat and water toys from the waves while other homeowners are enjoying the lake.
Crooked Lake is described as the hidden jewel of the area, simply because nobody knows about it. This is reflected in the low amount of boat traffic present, even on holiday weekends. There are no public launches on any of the 4 lakes in the chain, and all developable land has been built on already so there will be no new building happening to spoil nature. I would estimate that approximately 40% of the waterfront throughout the chain is developed, with the rest being protected wetland.
The channels connecting the lakes are a nature adventure in themselves. It’s very easy to completely forget that you’re just minutes away from civilization with the secluded feeling that Mother Nature provides here. Keep your eyes peeled for the deer in the woods, and the turtles sunning themselves on the logs. If you’re really lucky, you’ll spot a muskrat!
Dollar Lake is quite small, but perfect for relaxing in nature as none of the waterfront is developed, with only a single dock making the long run from a house hidden far up a hill. Two channels flow out of Dollar Lake, one connecting to Crooked Lake, and one connecting to Sandy Bottom Lake. Due to it’s small size, the locals jokingly call it “Half-Dollar Lake”
Sandy Bottom Lake is the largest in the chain, and receives the most boat traffic. This is the best lake for wakeboarding and waterskiing because you can have long straight runs with less turning frequency, but there are generally a few other boats to keep an eye on if you’re out on the weekends. There are also two sandbars that make great spots to drop an anchor and play.
In my opinion, Sandy Bottom provides the best location to view the sunset on the water from the pontoon, make sure to bring your bottle of wine and your closest friends. Speaking of your closest friends, you’ll be amazed to see how many friends that you didn’t even know you had until you move lakefront. Everyone will want to come visit suddenly!
There are two channels connecting Sandy Bottom Lake to Lime Kiln. The southernmost channel has summer cottages built on it, while the northernmost channel is completely undeveloped. The body of land between the two channels is undeveloped and cannot be built upon.
Lime Kiln Lake is mostly undeveloped, with a handful of summer cottages. Towards the end of the summer, the southernmost of the two channels leading into it from Sandy Bottom Lake becomes shallow and may make it difficult to enter, requiring the use of the north channel. There is a great rope swing at the north end of the lake which is great fun for the kids big and small!
There are also several small rivers flowing into and out of the lakes which can be explored by kayak when the water level is high in the spring. Due to the low volume of boat traffic on the lakes, kayaking can be enjoyed all year with no worries of excessive wake or boat collisions.
